Burwell and District Day Centre have been
awarded a 960 grant from the ASDA
Foundation to help recruit and support their
recently-launched new volunteer and
training programme.
The Day Centre in Burwell a registered
charity is an Adult Social Care provider,
supporting those aged 55 and over in the
village and surrounding areas who
experience loneliness, social isolation, or
may have been recently bereaved or
suOering from depression.
Open each weekday from 9am to 3.30pm,
Burwell Day Centre provides a number of
much-needed services for its clients in a safe
environment in the heart of the community.
As well as daily entertainment from either
musicians, quizzes, talks, arts and crafts or
chair-based exercise activities, the Day
Centre also provides a home-cooked 2-
course meal on site, which is also delivered
through their Meals on Wheels service
through a small team of volunteers.
The signiFcant cuts in government funding
more recently has meant that we cannot
aOord to take on any additional staO, so
reliance on volunteers is greater now than
ever before, said Hazel Williams MBE, Chair
of Trustees. At the same time as these cuts
in income, we are desperately short of
volunteers and need to recruit an additional
eight people in order to not only maintain
but expand the scope and range of the
services we oOer our clients. So we were
delighted when we heard we had been
successful in our bid to the ASDA
Foundation in securing 960 towards our
Volunteer Management Programme.
ASDAs Community Champion, Beryl Hill
based at the Beehive in Cambridge visited
Burwell Day Centre recently to see the
premises, share lunch with its clients, staO
and trustees and present a cheque to the
charity.
The funds will be used on recruitment costs,
training materials, DBS check fees, lanyards
and ID cards and other associated costs for
the campaign which has just started.
Were looking to recruit volunteer drivers,
meal and refreshment servers and general
helpers on-site at the Centre as well as meet
and greeters and support with various
admin duties, said James Hammond,
Executive Trustee of Burwell Day Centre who
is responsible for the initiative.
